O'Neil entered O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while he was still in highschool. Her vocal performance impressed the jury, and she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she suffered major defeats in the Top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed within the bottom three and then in the bottom two. They were stunned by the outcome and urged viewers to show support for contestants with strong singing talents such as Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performances. With two other stunning performances on September 7, 2005, the day that O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two, the judge Werner said that headlines in the morning papers would read O'Neil beat Goudie in order to be the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest champion in the show's time . O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
